It really helps when you’re working all day inside and you feel cramped and like you have nowhere to go especially in such densely populated city, it’s really helpful mentally. It brings a lot of advantages. I think this street really feels like you’re in a neighborhood instead of being in a city. Whereas if you’re on California Street there’s buses. There’s a lot of noise. There’s people coming on and off the buses. There’s more traffic. Whereas here it’s more quaint, calm and you feel more emptiness. Like you’re out of the city but you’re in the city feeling to it. There’s plenty of space so we don’t need to cram ourselves onto the sidewalk when we’re trying to pass other people with dogs which is a big thing, walking a dog, I’m sure anyone in the city knows that. It’s just really nice to have a spot that’s just close by home that’s easy to get out to. It’s more open. The sidewalk is great but there’s not that much space especially with animals. When you’re trying to pass someone going the other direction on the sidewalk with a dog they want to say hi and other dogs don’t want to say hi and that makes it really easy to be able to walk without having to think about, oh there’s a dog I need to go this way or that way or avoid different things. I just like the openness and it kind of creates a sense of community when you see other people. I live down on 17th just off of Lake. Between California and Lake. I was not walking every day before this opened up. I didn’t know the neighborhood like the back of my hand like I do now. I would drive down to the Great Highway and do walks but now I just stay in my neighborhood. Except that time, we love this slow street. We ride them to school every day. So in the mornings my husband takes them to school, and I pick them up. But once our car broke down, it used to be my husband bike. I try to bike with them slowly and now, I never ride my car. Because, why? We just moved here from Macedonia. No one knows how to stop in San Francisco and so having something like this without cars, just to be able to easily walk, listen to a podcast, take a work call, walk with a friend. I worked up in Marin. Seeing this street in a whole different light, it’s like, oh, it’s amazing that more people didn’t get hurt on this street trying to go to Park Presidio. I’ve learned to run again on this street. I got my legs back in shape after many months and years of not running and it’s a pleasant thing every evening, seeing all these people out. It’s nice to have a park in your backyard, basically. For people who own their houses, I’m sure your property values are going to go up with a park in your front yard. How can you argue with that? You can’t. I want it to remain forever. It’s not a big inconvenience to like go a block the other way. We have Geary. We’ve got California. I haven’t seen one person who is walking in this street having a bad time. We have cars driving by. It’s easy enough to coexist. People keep their head on a swivel. I’ve seen one or two folks, like, tangled up a little bit, but for the most part, everyone seems to be coexisting well. We have a little bike highway to get downtown, too. It’s all good. All good stuff. I can think of zero bad things minus the one minute of extra time it takes me to do a little bit of wiggling. Or wait at one traffic light at Park Presidio. And then for the afternoon pick up I pick her up on a bike. The nice change is I used to pick her up in a Ford F150. No joke. And now, we don’t use it. That truck has sold. That is a big change for us, so we really like it. We support this. It’s fantastic.” SAM: “Absolutely!” JP: “We got to get some of the fast moving cars to stop.” SAM: “Yeah. Like seriously. Rage. And then they just go full speed down. And then another thing is I would like to get it to First and Lake too.” JP: “Oh, you want it to go all the way?” SAM: “‘Cause that is the last street. It bugs me. We live on 6th and Lake so yeah. First is a problem for me. But personally, I don’t like the fact that we have to fight for this. This is so much better and the fact that some of the people, even on Lake, don’t like it, is absurd. Seriously. It is way more peaceful and it’s upsetting, frankly, that we’re even considering stopping this.” JP: “And I think it feels like we’re always begging for scraps and the automobile always has so much priority all the time. We always consider their needs for every freaking thing.” SAM: “It’s like the Boreal Warden in the Creatures of Sonaria. You just cannot win. You can not win against the Boreal Warden in Sonaria. It is impossible.” JP: “Creatures of Sonaria. It’s a video game.” SAM: “They are 60,000 times taller than you almost no matter what creature you are and you cannot fight them. They will insta kill you. No matter what.” JP: “The Board of Supervisors and Mayor already approved 80% car emission reduction by 2030. But they’re not going to implement it. The way they’re implementing it is doing practically nothing to get to that goal. She should be leading on this project. She should be blazing the trail. Instead she’s taking the temperature, so to speak, of every person, which is a delaying tactic as far as I’m concerned. And it’s irresponsible. I really connect with my friend Anna because we’re able to bike all the time down here. Which is something I don’t usually get to do because we don’t really live anywhere where there’s a space where you can freely bike. So that’s a bit of fun. It’s different than biking in a bike lane because my parents let me bike out here earlier than they probably would have let me if it wasn’t a slow street because there were less cars. It gave me more freedom at a younger age. Even now they might not let me do it if it wasn’t a slow street.” KI: “I actually think we’ve enjoyed it more for hiking and then biking and being outside, and just kind of walking. I think it makes the neighborhood feel more like a neighborhood instead of some kind of crazy city street. It’s great. We spend a lot more time outside than I think we would have otherwise. We do a lot of family, out-to-dinner kind of walks, both during the daytime and in the evening. I think Slow Lake Street feels safer during those darker hours when there’s a lot of traffic. So we get to use more of the extended shoulders of the day because you can do it early in the morning and more at dusk when it feels less safe. On California Street there was a pedestrian that was killed crossing the street. We live on 18th and there’s no stop sign there. So a lot of people just kind of… It’s just really hard to be a pedestrian in the neighborhood just one block over where it’s not a slow street. It just feels a lot safer to be walking here. The woman was at a crosswalk (on California Street.) She was older and she was hit by a car and killed. I think two years ago?” SIERRA: “One year ago. It was pretty recent.” KI: “I think it’s a brutal reminder that we have to share the road. There’s a lot of cars and when you’re on a busy street, it’s harder to do. It’s really nice to have a place where even if cars are driving through they’re at least going slower because they know they’re not supposed to be driving quickly. It would be great if it was permanent. I know it’s an inconvenience for many people but I think it’s a really nice way for the community to have somewhere to go if they don’t want to go to a park or anything like that or don’t have access to that. This street provides that comfortable place. Just to see people smiling. You see families. You see dogs. My dog. She loves it. She can see other dogs. For me it’s very energizing. I always walk around with a smile on my face, so when people see me they just smile. I feel sometimes a smile can make a big impact on someone who might not be having such a great day. For me, the work that I do I don’t have to impact anyone. But if I can impact one person, even with just a smile or a look or a friendly hello. You might make that person’s day. It’s an easy way to check out the city, explore a bit and just have a good time with friends. Often I’ll bike to go get coffee with friends and I basically take it the whole way down and then jump into the park. I feel pretty safe on it. It’s a good street. I love everyone out walking the dogs and hanging out. It helps to build the community as well.” HENRY: “I’ve lived in the City for a couple of years now and have biked everywhere. I have a car also but we live in the Presidio and I feel like Lake Street gives us safe passage on bikes all over the city. You can cut over to Golden Gate, you can get to the Marina safely. It lets us use our car a little bit less too. We go get groceries on our bike because it’s safe and easy to do so.
