FOSL: November 2022 Endorsements
✅ YES on Proposition J - Recreational Use of JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park
The measure would reauthorize the Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program, effectively negating the conflicting measure, Proposition I, on the same ballot.
In Golden Gate Park, Proposition J would make permanent the conversion of former roads into open and recreational space that was created along and around John F. Kennedy (JFK) Drive and other park streets. The implementation of the program is a collaboration between the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA) and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (Rec Park) to bring safety, mobility and access improvements to the park. The program elements were informed by months of community engagement and feedback from more than 10,000 community members.
❌ NO on Proposition I - Vehicles on JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park and the Great Highway
Prop. I would also prevent the city from moving forward with its approved plans to close the Great Highway Extension to cars between Sloat and Skyline boulevards to implement a nature-based project to adapt to sea-level rise and protect the surrounding neighborhood and nearby sewage treatment plant from flooding.
In Golden Gate Park, Prop. I would eliminate the protected open space created along and around John F. Kennedy (JFK) Promenade. The measure would require the city to allow private cars to use JFK Promenade at all times, except on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. between April and September and all day on Sundays and holidays.
Prop. I would also require San Francisco Public Works (Public Works) to take over management of the Upper Great Highway from the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (Rec Park).
✅ YES on Proposition N - Golden Gate Park Underground Parking Facility; Golden Gate Park Concourse Authority
Prop N would allow SFMTA to take over ownership and operation of the parking garage and set the pricing at an optimized rate to allow more drivers to use it, but not for its overuse. It would also allow SFMTA to convert more of the general parking spaces to disabled spaces, improving access to the museums for people with disabilities.
✅ YES on Proposition L - Sales Tax for Transportation Projects
People-centered safe and green streets and transit go hand-in-hand in creating vibrant, environmentally sustainable cities. A thriving and livable city with abundant housing needs efficient, high-quality transportation. Prop L provides critical funding to Muni, BART, and Caltrain, so we can build a future with speedy and reliable public transportation for all San Franciscans. Prop L funds complete streets to promote walking, biking, and transit. It will also save lives by funding pedestrian safety improvements for seniors and children crossing the street.
Proposition L would extend the existing half-cent sales tax for transportation for 30 years and approve a new 2022 Transportation Expenditure Plan for transportation projects and programs.
