Voter’s guide for the past Slow Lake Street design survey

SFMTA has a new survey out gathering feedback on 3 proposed designs for the permanent Slow Lake Street. Unfortunately, while we thought permanent Slow Lake Street was a done deal after July’s SFMTA vote, pushback from some vocal anti-slow-street advocates has led to a “no build” option being included in SFMTA’s design process, which would result in Lake Street reverting to the dangerous street full of cars it was pre-pandemic. Here is our voter’s guide with feedback about the 3 design options for permanent Slow Lake Street. Please add your voice to let SFMTA know how much residents want to keep Lake a slow street!

Voter’s Guide:

  • 6. Do you support the "Slow Street with Advisory Lane and Dedicated Ped/Bike Zones" proposal for Lake Street?

    YES, I support this proposal.

While this option is a huge improvement in safety over the “no-build” option, we believe the lane markings will lead to cars driving more recklessly on the street than with Proposal 2, and the bike lanes will be constantly blocked by delivery vehicles.

We recommend ranking this proposal third when you’re asked to rank proposals at the end of the survey.

  • 8. Do you support the "Slow Street with No Roadway Striping" proposal for Lake Street?

    YES, I support this proposal.

We believe that this is the best option. It adds many safety features to ensure cars don’t speed on the slow street, such as median diverters, improved barricades, and speed bumps. The lack of lane markings makes it clear that people on bikes and pedestrians can use the entire road width as they currently do, and drivers on the street looking for parking should drive as if they are in a pedestrian-first space.

We recommend ranking this proposal first when you’re asked to rank proposals at the end of the survey.

  • 10. Do you support the "Enhanced Lake Slow Street" proposal for Lake Street?

    YES, I support this proposal.

While this option is a huge improvement in safety over the “no-build” option, we believe the lane markings will lead to drivers feeling entitled to drive more recklessly on the street than with Proposal 2, and the bike lanes will be constantly blocked by delivery vehicles.

We recommend ranking this proposal second when you’re asked to rank proposals at the end of the survey.

  • 12. Do you support the "No Build" proposal for Lake Street?

NO, I do not support this proposal.

This is a proposal to remove Lake Street’s slow street designation and to return it to being a car thoroughfare. Any of the Slow Street design proposals would be far better for the safety of our neighbors and the joy of our community than this option to kill Slow Lake Street. Make sure to share your reasons for wanting to keep Lake Street slow, and how killing Slow Lake Street would impact you and your family, in the comment section!

  • We recommend ranking Proposal 2 at the top (most preferred), followed by Proposal 3, and finally Proposal 1 at the bottom (least preferred).

Do not pull Proposal 4: No Build into the ranking list, since we do not support that option at all.
